The larger video drum used for the Beta format permitted Sony engineers to modify the video signal and insert some extra information. The result was the revolutionary Betahi-fi stereo. The graphic above is a reproduction of a Sony literature piece that gives an overview of its technology and stellar performance. The other format couldn't match Betahi-fi because of their smaller video drum and its shorter signal path. So to try and match it, they resorted to an embedding and overwriting system. It requires two extra heads to yield similar but less impressive results. To open a technical review of Betahi-fi, click here.
