SIDE BAND BOOST + VARIABLE TRAP
AND PEAK ACC + VARIABLE TRAP

To record the highest quality picture and still obtain the widest playback compatibility Sony engineers developed two new technologies for the SLO-1800 production recorder. These are the "side band boost + variable trap" and the "peak ACC + variable trap". Band boost ups the Luminance (black and white information) where the SuperBeta detailing takes place and the peak ACC controls the chrominance (color information) that is added to the B&W picture. ACC stands for automatic color control. What these two do during recording in SuperBeta is follow the gains of the two signal components. When their gain reaches a certain high point they compress them. Because this suppression changes as the gain goes up they are labeled as variable. All betas VCRs have similar circuits but in the SLO-1800 their ranges are clipped at a lower preset leveling off point. The result is a sharper picture for tapes played back on standard beta machines (non-SuperBeta). It also helps with SuperBeta playback too. Requires a SuperBeta input source to function. The side band boost feature can be switched off for standard Beta recording.
