This feature allows you to select which remote channel you want your VCR to receive. Most Sony Beta models receive their infrared remote signals on VTR channel 1. But as Betamax gained popularity the likelihood of owners have multiple units dictated the need for additional channels. Having a second channel (VTR 2) as an option, or even a third (VTR 3) allowed owners to control each model separately. Having one VCR receiving on VTR 1 and the other on 2 eliminated conflicts.
