OPTIONAL REMOTES

Not all Betas came with a matching remote. Some were so heavily discounted that as a cost saving measure it was not included, often it could be purchased separately. Sometimes two similar models were offered with the one that included a remote being slightly more expensive. In a few cases more than one style of remote was available, some even including TV functions. Sony did this to marry the Betamax to their popular televisions. Another type of remote accessory was one that allowed timed operation of a recorder or camera. There were special function remote consoles that controlled multiple VCRs for editing. There were devices that replaced a wired remote with infrared type controller. Most professional Beta models were made to interface with several types of specialty equipment depending on the application. These had multi-connectors on the back for remote operation and the end user purchased the auxiliary device that performed a particular function.
