If a Beta looks nice and doesn't offer any external clues as to the life it has had one of ways to get a feel for its condition is to look inside the cassette door. A visual inspection of the carrier mechanism can reveal if lots of cassettes have been loaded in the machine. This carrier is one that isn't painted, it has a natural silver metal color. If heavy wear were present one would be able to see indicators of usage. Areas on both sides would be shiny and slick. In the example above we don't see any of this so it would indicate little or no use. Click on the photo for another angle. How much does no wear like this improve the value of a Beta? It only has an impact if other factors enter the picture, such as operational malfunctions, physical damage, electronic problems and the like. You expect a unit to have some wear. It was purchased to be used, so this is just another factor in getting an overall feel for how much of a challenge it would be to restore it back to like new condition.
