These VCRs were made for people that traveled around the world and wanted a to have a Betamax that matched the television standard for the country where they were presently located. These VCR did not convert one standard to another (that required a separate device). These Betas were used by persons in the armed services, diplomats, business travelers, etc. They could be located in Saudi Arabia for a while and then they might move on to Germany or Turkey. While in these different countries these special Beta VCRs would operate on different television standards, eliminating the need of buying separate machines. When in a PAL formatted country it would operate in PAL, when in a country that used SECAM it would do SECAM, etc. The more television systems it would handle the more featured (and expensive) the Beta unit would be. The top of the line was the SL-800ME that could handle eight different television standards. Most of the Sony multi-format models made are shown above. They weren't the only manufacturer to make multiple format Betas, Sanyo and Toshiba made several. ©Misterßetamax go to homepage |
