FLUORESCENT MULTI-DISPLAY

The first Betas didn't have a fluorescent display. It first appeared as a clock/timer, and it has remained an integral part of almost every Beta VCR since. Its job is to provide crucial information and help clarify operations. In the example above, it could not only show the time but also the tape speed, direction, and its location in hours, minutes, and seconds, plus a whole lot more. These displays came in all sizes, from the large 2x4 inch fact-filled monsters found in some high-end units to a small 1x3 showing just the most basic info. The lettering and symbols could be illuminated in white, green, blue, and red. To show tape direction, arrows might be used. A picture of a cassette could indicate one was loaded inside. There could be dots, lines, pointing hands, circles, you name it. If it would aid the end user and add to the appeal of the VCR, it was included. They varied greatly, and the illustration above is of one of the more basic designs found in a number of different models (all the characters are purposely illuminated).
