CASSETTE LOADER WEAR
If a Beta looks nice and doesn't offer any external clues as to the life it has had, one of ways to get a feel for its condition is to examine the inside of the cassette loader. Sort of looking the horse in the mouth. A peek inside and a visual inspection of the carrier mechanism can show if lots of cassettes have passed through the machine. In the photo above we are looking at the loader with the benefit of having the top cabinet removed and other structural components out of the way so we can see better. Look at the areas where the paint has been worn away. This is an indication that a lot of cassettes have been loaded. If the carrier is one that isn't painted but has the natural metal, you will still be able to see wear as shiny spots where the cassette slides in and out. Click on the photo for another angle. How much does wear like this effect the value? It only has an impact if other factors enter the picture, such as operational malfunctions, physical damage, electronic problems and the like. You would expect the unit to have some wear. It was purchased to use, so this just becomes another factor in getting an overall feel for how much of a challenge it would be to restore it back to like new condition.
