INDEX MARKING AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM

Index marking is a sorting system that uses a high-frequency inaudible tone, called an index, to record a location in a videotape. This index mark is placed in the linear (monaural) audio track, and it is recorded every time the REC function is requested or a timer recording starts. It can also be manually inserted or erased. During indexing, the word INDEX will flash several times in the display, or it will be indicated in some other way. This VCR senses these "silent" marks and can use them for repeating segments, locating scenes, finding editing points, and bookkeeping. During playback, rewind, fast-forward, and BetaScan index will flash, or its number will be displayed as each mark passes by. These notifications can be used to find a location on the tape without having to observe the video. Rewind, fast forward, stop, or playback can be ordered from a selected index location in some cases. Consult the owner's manual for operation. No index mark is inserted if a recording begins from the record pause mode.
