INDEX MARKING AND RETRIEVAL SYSTEM

Index marking is a sorting system that uses a high-frequency inaudible tone, called an index, to record a location in a video tape. This index mark is placed in the linear (monaural) audio track and It is recorded every time the REC function is requested or a timer recording starts or when manually inserted. During indexing the word INDEX will flash several times in the display or it will be indicated in some other way. This VCR senses these "silent" marks and can use them for repeating segments, locating scenes, find edit points and for bookkeeping. During playback, rewind, fast-forward and BetaScan index will flash or its number will be displayed as each mark passes by. These notifications can be used to find a location on the tape without having to observe the video. During rewind and fast forward, stop or playback can be ordered from a particular index location. The tones can also be manually erased. No index mark is inserted if recording begins from the record pause mode.
