Here is an example of a plastic lens repair with a wrinkle. Since we will be using various compounds that cut and polish the lens it would also do the same to the surrounding paint. So here is how we protect the paint when making the plastic repair. Top left in the photo shows the scratches in the lens. Notice also that paper and several layers of masking tape are being used to isolate the plastic from the surrounding paint. Next in the upper right the scratch is wet sanded with ultra-fine 1500-2000 grit sandpaper. This is followed by rubbing and polishing with compound either by hand or with a low speed drill motor, see photo lower left. To complete the repair the lens is polished and buffed to a high luster and then the tape and paper is removed leaving the surrounding paint unaffected.
