The capacitors on the CCD (charged coupled device) board in the Betamovies degrade over time and leak liquid electrolyte. It is very corrosive and it attacks the copper printed circuits and eats them away. The board then become unreliable or fails altogether, resulting in an intermittent or no image condition. How the damage progresses depends on temperature and time, but it seems to be a universal event with the CCD Betamovie units. The correction involves removing the capacitors and cleaning away the caustic liquid. Then the damaged circuits are repaired, tested and the new tantalum capacitors are installed. This type capacitor is much more expensive than the common foil type, but the benefit to them is that they have a longer life, aren't as sensitive to breaking down, have a better temperature tolerance and no liquid to leak out.
