FOUR DIGIT TAPE COUNTER

This Betamax has a four-digit tumbler-type tape counter to help assist you in finding a particular location within a recording. Driven by a belt, it has small numbered wheels that turned as the tape travels through the machine. These can be set to all zeros by pressing a button which can be used as a memory location for stopping the tape during winding. This type of analog counter was used for several years and was eventually replaced by a more accurate counting method. It uses the electronic control track pulse recorded on the tape to count off a location. These reference numbers appeared in a fluorescent display and usually had a memory return function. Instead of using the control track some Betas used one of the reels inside to count the tape's movement. Their numbers referenced the amount of tape on the reels rather than movement of the tape passing by the control track head. Consult the features list to see if this VCR has a memory function included with its tape counter.
