THE SONY FIVE STAGE FILTER SYSTEM

For the SL-HF2100 Sony incorporates a five-stage digital filtering system. Filtering is required to separate the video components that go into making a clean color picture. Video is composed of a black and white elements (called luminance) to which color is added (called chrominance). Each must be processed separately in every VCR (and television). To do this special components called filters are used during recording. These separated details are placed back together for playback. The cleaner the filtering, the less noise and interference in the picture. Sony states "The new five-stage video digital signal processor helps clean, filter, and separate the video signal with near-perfect precision". The result is a sharper picture with fewer artifacts.
