The SL-HF900 was the only Sony model to feature a DETAIL switch. Located inside the front component door it enhances the picture without altering the dropout-correcting circuits. It is intended to be used when playing super high grade tapes. When it is switched from NORM (normal) to HIGH, the playback picture is sharpened to show more detail. It does this by pushing up the SuperBeta picture luminance circuit. It takes advantage of the ultra-dense particle tape found in Sony PRO-X, UHG, HG, and other high-quality tapes.
