CONTROL-L and CONTROL-S

Control-L is a digital language developed by Sony that is used to control and synchronize VCRs, camcorders, cameras and other devices. It enables recorders and accessories to operate compatible devices over a cable. Communication is bi-directional and made up in bundles of 8 (8-bit) bytes containing code. Connection is by cable, either a 5-pin mini-DIN and 3-conductor mini-jack cable or one with two 3-connector mini-jacks. The "L" is for LANC, or Local Application Control Bus. Control-LF is similar and used only with the GS-50. It links two of these VCRs to a controller, the RM-E50 editing console. Sony Control-S is uni-directional. It receives no information back from the device being operated. The "S" in this case stands for Slave since there is no information interchange. The language used for both is the same as that used for Sony Beta remote controls.
