CHASSIS DESIGNS
As the Beta format matured the different chassis designs began to be identified in the service manuals. The very first units didn't have a design designation but once new models began to come available it became necessary to alert the service people that changes had been made and new areas inside needed special attention. There were new parts requiring new tools and old parts disappeared. In the graphic above (from the service manual) the last design received a general classification of 711. There were some slight variations of the pattern but the tape path was never deviated from. If you click on the picture the tape travel is shown in red. Click on the picture again and the previous design designated as the 710 is seen. Click again and its path is shown in red. As you can see the path was reduced from 710 to 711 but the path around the drum, ACE (audio, control, erase) location remained the same. This design improvement was done to reduce component size and make the chassis's footprint smaller. To see the 711 again click on and through the pictures.
