There are two types of capstans used in late model Betamaxes. If a model is not a full featured unit with functions like reverse play, stepping or scan it may have a capstan that doesn't require adjustment. It mounts solid in the unit with three screws. It is shown on the left. Models that do have special features can have a capstan like the one on the right. It has three mounting points that allow it to pivot in two directions.
Two of the three points have adjustment screws to raise and lower the height of two corners of a triangle. The screw nearest to the drum is not adjusted and acts as a pivot. Springs under the attaching screws hold tension against the adjustments. Click on the photo. This shows this capstan is mounted in the base frame. The height adjustment screws are seen on the right. Unless this capstan is replaced it normally does not require adjustment. But it must run the tape smoothly in reverse and forward with no crawl up or down against the ACE head. This indicates the capstan is perpendicular and adjustment isn't required. The height of the number nine guide and the angle of the ACE assembly also play a part in tape travel during directional changes, so they might need attention should any irregularities be discovered during a capstan performance check. Any problems with the capstan are corrected during repair, reconditioning and refurbishing. Click on the picture again to see the solid mounted capstan mounting screws. It has no adjustment.
