BETA HI-FI AUDIO ALIGNMENT
When Sony first introduced the Betahi-fi system it was a breakthrough in stereo technology. The incredible writing speed of the video heads was employed to record the audio information and virtually eliminate the wow, flutter and noise that had always plagued linear (reel-to-reel) recording. When first introduced the electronics involved was formidable. An example of that early circuitry can be seen on the left in the photo above. Betahi-fi continued to be refined and improved over the years and illustrated on the right is a later designed single composite circuit board that did the job. For the last Betas much of it was miniaturized down to fit inside the composition block in the center. As the electronics became more and more miniaturized the adjustments became less and less. Click on the photo. Here is what is needed for the SL-HF900 SuperBetahi-fi to check it for peak performance. On the upper left is the test equipment required and the alignment sequence is below it. The procedure starts on the right and continues on the next page. Items two thru nine are not outlined here because they pertain to testing the regular audio. All of this is to check for proper operation. Any deviation from the designated specifications would point to a failed component that would need to be corrected with a repair. The only adjustment mentioned pertains to adjusting the testing equipment to produce the required output.
