Let's start with the Beta cassette and work our way throught the early history of video from there. I'm not going to go into great detail here on its design because this discussion is more about the formats that didn't survive. If you want to delve deeper into its design, click here. Click on the photo and notice the pocket for the loading components that are moved into the machine and thread the tape around the drum for playback and record. You also see two line-up or locating holes that are to insure accurate parking of the cassette in the loaded position. The lid lock releases the cover to expose and release the tape for threading. Click again and the next picture shows the cassette gutted with all the various parts identified. Click again to remove the arrows and identifiers.
