Most Beta VCRs have a circuit that removes unwanted hiss from the normal (linear) audio track. Called BNR (for Beta Noise Reduction) it uses a strategy that compresses and expands the audio signal similar to the way Dolby® and dbx® noise-reduction systems do. This electronic processing reduces the high volume hiss generated by residual magnetization. It is always present, even in new tape, and generated by the microscopic metal oxide granules that are imbedded in the tapes binder coating. Some recorders have a switch for turning this circuit off (see models description). The instruction manual says to keep it set the BNR to OFF unless there is excessive residual noise coming from the tape during playback. In which case set it to ON. Japanese models and the professional Extended Definition Beta EDW-30F label this the TONE switch. BNR also applies to linear stereo VCRs.
