BETAMOVIE IMAGER REPAIR

The capacitors located on the CCD (charged coupled device) printed circuit board in the Betamovie recorders degrade over time and leak liquid electrolyte. It is highly corrosive and attacks the copper printed circuits and eats them away. The board then becomes unreliable or will fail altogether, resulting in intermittent or no image. The progress of the damage depends on temperature and time, but it seems to be a universal event with all of these units. The correction involves removing the capacitors and cleaning away the caustic liquid. Once this is accomplished the damaged circuits are repaired, tested and the new tantalum capacitors are installed. This type capacitor is much more expensive than the common foil type. The benefits of them is they aren't as sensitive to breaking down, have a longer life, better temperature tolerance and no liquid to leak out.
