To properly align the path requires a special factory alignment cassette tape used as a reference tool. Pictured above are examples of these cassettes. Each has a number of recorded segments that are used to perform specific tests and adjustments. They are the standard by which all the Beta units are to be set for compatibility between machines. This sets that the tracking center and insures other reference points will not vary from one unit to the next. As explained in the service manuals the alignment tape is not supposed to be used for the actual procedure. It is much too expensive and there is the possibility that it could be damaged from a machine that might be way off. The technician is instructed to make several copies and save the master. Now you are immediately struck with the question, what about the performance of the machines the copies are made from? Here is how this dilemma is handled. I use the master tape to verify several machines before making duplicates of the original. In the photo above there are four cassettes pictured. The ones on the upper left and right are the factory masters. The cassette on the lower left is one of several spares I use to finalize the procedure and in the lower right is a prepared cassette used for adjustment. The lid and various other parts of the cassette have been discarded because they would obstruct some of the adjusting points.
