TENSION ARM (GUIDE NUMBER ONE)
In the illustration above you can see the mechanics of the tension regulator arm (guide number one) and how a friction band used. The part of the plastic arm that contacts the tape is the metal pin. It is shown in the circle and magnified greatly on the left. The two enlargements show the metal pin wear. Running up and down on the pin at the right is a flat spot that has been created over time by the tape passing over it. The one on the left is new and you can clearly see that it is nicely rounded. When the pin on the arm wears flat the tape begins to drag as it travels over it, causing the arm to shake or vibrate. This shows up in the video as wavy or saw-teeth lines. It can become so serious sometimes that an audible squeal will be heard coming from the machine. All Beta VCRs I refurbish have this pin either replaced or renewed.
