RENT-A-BETAS

An enterprising company called International located in Chatsworth California decided early on that what the Beta format needed was a way for folks to watch rental movies without having to own a VCR. They contracted with both Sanyo and Toshiba to have them make player only versions of their current (1982) portables. The results were the VPR 4800 (Sanyo) and the V-9030T (Toshiba) units cast in blue, to distinguish them from the regular models, and voilá the Rent-A-Beta was born. These were housed in a blue blow molded case with a convenient handle. They worked off of house current, came complete with the cables to hook them up and had easy-to-read instructions printed right on the case. This innovation opened up a whole new market for the tape rental business and provided a needed shot in the arm for Beta. Someone else had a similar idea.
