NEW OR REFURBISHED CABINET
Most of the higher end Betas have cabinets made of metal that are susceptible to dents, dings and scratches. This can be an indicator of the treatment that the unit has received. Severe dents may point to serious internal damage. If it's been dropped there could be broken plastic parts inside caused from the movement of the heavy assemblies (inertial movement). The cabinet of the Beta in the picture above looks like new and would indicate little trauma. It gives the appearance that it has had excellent care during its lifetime. Now look at the front of this machine. Notice the beautiful condition of the front panel (also called the bezel or fascia). Of all the things that can detract from the value of a Beta damage here ranks as the highest. If an item is unattractive it simply can't make a favorable impression to a prospective owner. Missing doors, cracks, broken hinges, missing buttons, all add up to indicate that the unit just wasn't cared for properly in its lifetime, or has been in an accident. The unfortunate thing is replacement appearance items are just not available, so the great condition of this front just makes this Beta more appealing. Click on the picture. One more item that gives this unit a higher value is the sticker on the back. If it says refurbished by yours truly, as this one does, then you know it will be ready to give great service for a long time to come. Next up is a chart that will help you get a feel for ranking a Betas value based upon these factors and more. Let's examine that now by clicking here.
