LUBRICATION
Before we continue on with the tape path and electrical alignment I want to cover the subject of lubrication. It seems simple enough but it should only be used in a limited amount and with the proper type of materials. Shown above are the only three lubricants I use in the Beta machines and each is very special. On the left is a very light multipurpose machine oil that has the very special property of finding its way into tight areas. This property is called wicking and it most commonly is found in penetrating oils. But this special oil has the added characteristics of staying where you put it. The most important part is the staying there. In the distant past this type lubricant was reserved for watches and it came from killing whales. But today we have replacements that are much better. I use this oil to lubricate any component that has shafts running in bushings. Examples would be the capstan, loader and reel motors. In the center is a medium weight nonconductive grease that has the ability to cling to plastic surfaces. This is used on the plastic gears and mechanisms, such as in loader arms, worm gears, threading transmissions, or on any plastic surface that slides over another. On the right is a unique medium viscosity oil that is able to string and clings to surfaces that have more clearance between the moving components. In these situations the light oil doesn't offer enough body. This oil can occupy the slightly larger space and stay in place. I use this oil for reduction gears, ball bearings, threading rings or anywhere that parts need lubrication that have a loose fit. Oils are applied sparingly using a needle dispenser or the end of a tooth pick. Grease is applied is quantities just necessary to coat the moving parts and no more. Oils and greases have the property of attracting and retaining dust and dirt so moderation is the key. To go back to previous page click here.
