CAPSTAN CAPACITOR REPLACEMENT
Over time the surface capacitors mounted on the capstan motor board start to leak caustic electrolyte. It crawls everywhere and damages the copper traces printed on the circuit board. The photo above shows a typical motor. Click on the photo and you can see in the upper right the residue and how the fluid migrates around on the board. Unfortunately this caustic liquid loves copper and eats it up. The result is shown lower left. As it is dissolved the circuits start to lose their ability to conduct properly and failure results. In many instances the capacitors, as they dry out, start to fail and bursts begin to appear in the playback video. But much of the time the capstan simply fails. Sometimes the capstan can be repaired. Click on the photo. Here is another example of a damaged board plus a pile of bad caps. The next picture shows the start of the repair after all the residue has been removed. A jumper wire bridges an open circuit that was destroyed by the action of the leaking fluid. The next picture shows the capstan with new capacitors ready for years of new service. All Betas refurbished by yours truly have the old caps removed, the board cleaned and, if needed, repaired and replace with new ones.
