FUNCTION BUTTON REPAIR
One of the most attractive styles of keypads that appeared briefly on several models of Betas featured brushed aluminum function buttons. They were flat flexible strips attached to the faceplate with adhesive. Over time and after repeated use the adhesive began to fail and the keys fell off. Once this happened the unit becomes difficult to operate and the loose pieces are subject to getting lost. The metal strips can be re-applied but it is best done using a special procedure. In the picture above you can see the problem and an attempt at gluing back the keys, which failed. Click on the picture and another example of this problem can be seen on a different model. Click on the picture again and examine several close up photos of the failed adhesive strips. The next photo shows the faceplate after all of the old glue is removed. This is done to offer a clean, fresh surface for good adhesion when the keys are replaced. Click on the photo and the next step is cleaning the individual strips of keys and applying a new improved bonding strip to them. The next photo shows the keys ready to have the backing paper removed. Next the keys are carefully positioned on the faceplate and then pressed into place. Notice the metal static ground discharge tabs found at various locations on the faceplate so they contact the metal. These have to be touching the metal of the keys so there are small cut away areas on the adhesive strips. This is to allow the little tabs to make contact from behind. The keys must be grounded (to the cabinet) to prevent static electricity from jumping from ones finger and then into the circuits, which would cause IC damage. The next photo shows the finished repair. To proceed to the next section that describes the EXTERNAL CLEANING AND RENEW click here.
