CABINET REPAIR
Taking scratches and dents out of a metal cabinet is very much like auto body work. If you look to the top left in the photo above you will see some of the tools that are used for metal cabinet reworking. Removing dents usually means smoothing out the imperfections, filling with resin, then sanding and painting. For our example here we are going to show a scratch repair which uses the final steps, less the metal straightening. We will be using a scratch filler material (pink in color), which is like a heavy thick paint that is applied with a putty knife, it dries quickly and sands easily. Primer is also used, it is a thick base coat spray paint that bonds well to metal and old paint. It also dries quickly, fills minor imperfections and is easily smooth sanded. The last step is spraying of the final color coating. So starting at the upper right in the picture we see the scratch (or minor dent) to be filled and painted. The photo lower left shows the area filled with a heavy primer (a two-part hardening resin filler would be used for deeper areas). The lower right of the photo shows rough sanding to smooth the area. Click on the photo and starting upper left, finish sanding with a fine grit paper to smooth and feather. This would be followed by a primer coat of paint and another fine sanding. (If metal is exposed during this sanding process then an additional coating of primer would be applied and then lightly sanded.) Next quadrant in the upper right of the photo shows final color painting of the cabinet. Two coats of color would most likely be required. The lower left photo is buffing and polishing to even out the paint and for sealing the surface. And finally the lower right shows the finished top panel on the refurbished Beta.
